Renaissance music was written between the 1400's and the 1600's but was definitely not an immediate thing. Musicologists debate over when the exact beginning of the renaissance style actually began. Many say as early as the 1300's while other say that it started as late as 1470. The major influence of this style was the Italian humanists rediscovering and reinterpreting the music of ancient Greece and Rome.
Style and Trends
In early renaissance music, the interval of the thirds was used to provide consonance to a piece and was one of the most noticeable feature . Thirds were considered dissonance during the middle ages and were therefore not used as often during that time frame. Another notable feature of renaissance music is the use of polyphony. The pieces also, generally, repeated certain sections often.
New Style
This new style was not used so much as a religious type of music but rather one of entertainment. It was aimed so that everyone no matter the status could understand and enjoy it.
Consonance: a harmony, chord, or interval considered stable, sounding together. Dissonance: opposite of consonance. Polyphony: a texture consisting of two or more independent melodic voices, as opposed to music with just one voice (monophony) or music with one dominant melodic voice accompanied by chords (homophony.)
